Box Score 2 The Lady Royals successfully jumped into the weekend on Saturday, taking a pair of ODAC wins from Guilford College. The EMU women continue their road swing with a twinbill at Lynchburg on Sunday.
EMU 2, Guilford 0
The women didn't get a base runner in game one until the third inning, when they scored. Rachel Breeden (Shenandoah, VA/Page County) led off with a walk and Jordan Aylor (Madison, VA/Madison County) reached on a throwing error by the GC catcher. One out later, Lisa Lee (Buckingham, VA/Buckingham County) ripped a double to left center, plating both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Eastern Mennonite threatened again the fifth, but Aylor was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly ball to center.
Lee, who also started in the circle, ran into a jam in the bottom of the inning, as the Quakers loaded the bases with two outs. But the senior coaxed a ground ball to escape unscathed.
The defense turned a double play to end GC's part of the sixth, and Lee worked through a scoreless seventh as well to preserve the complete game shutout.
EMU was limited to just three hits in the opener but made them work. Lee was 1-3 with both RBIs. Molly Smith (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) and Sara Jenkins (Stanley, VA/Page County) each hit singles.
Lee allowed seven hits from the circle but managed the scoreless seven innings for the win.
EMU 8, Guilford 3
Game two was quiet until the Lady Royals broke through. Lee cranked a solo homer in the third. After the Quakers got a single run in the bottom of the frame, EMU exploded in the fourth.
Courtney Allman (Mt. Solon, VA/Fort Defiance) led off the frame with a single, and Jenkins and Rasheeda Crews (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) singled to load the bases. The women scored on a hit batter and a single, before Lee drove out a grand slam to center field, blowing open a 7-1 lead.
Guilford scored twice in the fifth with just one hit, but Megan Viafora (Stanley, VA/Page County) added an RBI single in the seventh to provide the final 8-3 score.
After the low-scoring win in the game one, Eastern Mennonite broke out 14 hits in the nightcap. Lee finished 2-4 as the leadoff batter. She had five RBIs and two runs on the strength of her two longballs. Lee now leads the team with six homeruns.
Brooke Hensley (Elkton, VA/Spotswood) and Viafora each had a trio of hits, with Viafora adding two RBIs and a run scored. Crews finished 2-3 with a walk, and scored twice.
Aylor threw the complete game, scattering six hits while striking out three.
The Lady Royals are now 19-3 overall and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The women play at Lynchburg Sunday afternoon.
