Box Score The Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team ran in to a defensive power Saturday night, falling at home to Lynchburg and getting shut out for just the second time this season, 3-0.
The Royals had a couple of fantastic looks in the 16th minute, but came up empty. Mark Mast (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) sent a long shot just inches over the bar, and a Joao Downs (Limon, Costa Rica/Cologio de Limon) header off a corner was saved.
Five minutes later, Lynchburg found the scoreboard, getting a goal after a cross was deflected on front of the net. From there the visitors took over.
The score remained 1-0 through the half, and the visiting Hornets came out determined to add insurance in the second. Their aggressive start netted a second score just 2:25 into the half, making it 2-0. Lynchburg added one more in the 64th minute for the final tally.
The Hornets had a 22-7 edge in shots including 9-4 on goal. Andrew Yoder (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) had six saves for EMU. Christian Rhine (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) had two shots.
The loss, the Royals' fifth over their last six games, drops the men to 7-8-1 overall and 4-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. They are at Emory & Henry on Wednesday with a 7:00pm start time.
Eastern Mennonite University also honored the 1998 team during a halftime ceremony. That team won the ODAC Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest an EMU soccer team has ever gone in the national tourney. As part of the ceremony, an ODAC Championship banner was unveiled to be placed at the Turf Field, and a Sweet 16 banner was also unveiled to be placed in Yoder Arena.
