Box Score Looking to build on their ODAC-opening win last Saturday, the Royals hit the road to take on Washington & Lee Tuesday. Each team scored in regulation, but Mitchell Leap's (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) header less than a minute into overtime gave Eastern Mennonite the 2-1 win.
Although the host Generals took more shots in the first half, EMU took the first lead. After a W&L foul just outside the box, defender Jared Ross (Sarasota, FL/Sarasota Christian) launched the direct kick from the left side and beat the goalie from long range for a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Washington & Lee snuck in the equalizer late in the second half, tying it at 1-1 with 15:20 left on the clock. The Generals kept pushing, hoping for another goal to steal the game, but keeper Patrick Fox (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) made three saves in the final 12 minutes to earn extra time.
The Royals didn't need much of the extra session, as Ross found Leap just 50 seconds in. Leap slipped a header past the Generals' keeper to send EMU home with the victory.
The men were handily out-shot, 22-9, but got the one shot that mattered. Fox finished with eight saves.
The win is the second straight for EMU, as they move to 4-4-1 after their first winning streak of the season. The Royals also start 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Next up is a big game against Randolph, which is currently 7-0, although the WildCats have yet to play an ODAC contest. Game time in Harrisonburg on Saturday is 7:00 PM.
