Lady Royals Take Wins From Guilford In Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Three days after pounding six homeruns in a sweep of Bridgewater, the Lady Royals were held to just one longball Saturday against Guilford. But the Eastern Mennonite women found plenty of other ways to score and took a dramatic sweep from the Quakers, improving to 4-0 in the ODAC on a season-best six game winning streak.

EMU 8, Guilford 2
Box Score
The Lady Royals finally broke through in the bottom of the third when Lisa Lee (Buckhingham, Va./Buckingham) ripped a two-out double down the third baseline. Back-to-back singles from Molly Smith (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) and Courtney Allman (Weyers Cave, Va./Fort Defiance) plated two runs and put EMU up 2-0.

The Quakers got on the scoreboard in their next at-bat, bringing in a run on a two-out single.

Guilford tied the game with an unearned run the sixth but the Lady Royals went back up in the bottom of the frame.

The women got a leadoff walk followed by a single, chasing GC's starting pitcher, Ashley Boteler. After a walk and five hits, the women had batted around and scored six runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Lee held the Quakers in check in the seventh to secure the win.

EMU outhit Guilford 12-4 and had five players with multi-hit games. Jessica Sullivan (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) went 3-3 and scored a run. Smith was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Lee pitched the complete game and got the win. She struck out six and allowed only one earned run.

EMU 6, Guilford 5 - 8 innings
Box Score
The Lady Royals took the lead in the first as Jessica Blosser (Crimora, Va./Wilson Memorial) led off with a single and scored on a single from Lee.

Guilford strung together a big inning in the third, however, bringing in four runs to take a 4-1 lead. EMU got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2.

Allman hit her fifth homerun of the season in the fifth, scoring two and tying things up at 4-4.

The Quakers loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Lee got a strikeout to end the rally and keep the game tied.

The visitors were at it again in the seventh, getting a leadoff single. After a double, Allman took the cutoff and threw out the runner at home. Lee then walked a batter to put runners on first and second with just one out. But she struck out the next batter and catcher Rasheeda Crews (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell) threw out the runner at first, ending the threat.

The game slipped into extra innings, complete with the international tie-breaker rule, and Guilford plated a run with two outs in the eighth to go up 5-4.

The Lady Royals got runners on first and second in their half of the eighth, but a pair of strikeouts put the women down to their last out. Sullivan came through with the clutch hit, roping a deep single to center to score both runners and give EMU the 6-5 win.

Despite being outhit 15-7, the Lady Royals found a way to win. Sullivan finished 2-4 with the two big RBIs. Allman finished 2-3 from the plate, including her fifth homerun in EMU's past eight games. Lee scored twice and had an RBI. The women also had three stolen bases in the game.

Smith started on the hill and was charged with four runs in 2-1/3 innings. Lee pitched the final 5-1/3, giving up 10 hits but working her way out of jams. She earned the victory, her second of the day, and improved to 8-4 on the year.

Eastern Mennonite is 11-7 with the wins, including 4-0 in the ODAC. The women host Lynchburg tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch at 2:00pm.
