Box Score It was all EMU Saturday in Harrisonburg when the field hockey women hosted Sweet Briar. The women scored in the opening minute and closing second en route to an 8-0 final over the Vixen.
The Lady Royals dominated play and cracked the scoreboard in the first minute. Michelle Zook (Allensville, PA/Belleville Mennonite) dribbled up the right side and sent a cross to Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) who made it 1-0.
It took another 20 minutes before the floodgates opened. Andrea Myers (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) scored her first career goal with another assist from Zook. Nicole Bencsik (Telford, PA/Souderton) added an unassisted goal before Zook got her own score in the closing seconds of the half.
Three minutes into the second, Mandy Stowers (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) stuck a penalty stroke through the goalie's legs for a 5-0 lead.
Zook scored her second of the game in the 48th minute, getting a great pass from Jenna Longenecker (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley). Myers then got her second in the 54th, making it 7-0.
Valerie Landis (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) added one more as the clock expired for the final 8-0 tally.
EMU controlled action on the field and had a 55-2 edge in shots, including 32-0 on goal. It was the third shutout of the season.
Seven different players scored or assisted for the women, led by Zook's two goals and two assists. Myers also had two goals.
The Lady Royals improve to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Next up is a non-conference road game at No. 15 Christopher Newport on Wednesday.
