Day Two Of The Classic Turns Into Another Split

Day two of the Hampton Inn & Sleep Inn EMU D-II/D-III Classic continued Saturday in Harrisonburg and the Royals walked away with another second respectable split. Eastern Mennonite took a win from Kean to start play before bowing out in four against Pfeiffer late in the day.

Even though they were playing at a classic, the Royals opened up Saturday with a conference match against Kean. The Cougars, in their first year of existence, joined EMU's new division of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association, the Metro Division.

In game one, the men ran away with a 25-14 victory, giving them visions of a sweep. But Kean toughened up for the second game.

The two traded leads early on before the Cougars scored four straight to surge ahead 23-20. EMU got back within one point, but an attack error gave Kean the win, 25-23.

Rejuvenated by their win, the Cougars hung around in game three. The Royals got a late three-point run to extend their lead to 22-17 and then held on for the win, 25-21.

After giving up the opening point in game four, EMU scored five straight to take control. A few more quick bursts and the men were up 18-9. Kean couldn't did out of the hole as the Royals closed the match with a 25-14 victory.

Chris Moise (Hollywood, Fl./South Broward) led all players with 17 kills and had two service aces. Fellow sophomore John Grove (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) added eight kills on just 11 attacks and had a match high six block assists and one solo stuff.

Frankie Coto (Miami, Fl./Southwest Miami) added eight kills along with four block assists and one solo knock down. Setter John Barry (Worthington, Oh./Worthington Kilbourne) had 41 assists and tied for the match high with eight digs.

The Royals and Pfeiffer wrapped up play at the Classic in fine fashion with the Falcons taking a 3-1 win.

The first game went more than the distance. EMU broke a 19-19 tie and pushed to a 24-21 edge, serving for game point. But Pfeiffer scored four straight to grab a lead and push the game past 25.

Each team had chances to take the game before the Falcons finally closed the door on a 34-32 win.

Pfeiffer took a quick 4-1 lead in game two before the Royals went up 11-7. The men never gave up the edge and evened the match with a 25-22 decision.

Game three was also Falcons as they jumped to an 11-5 lead and never looked back to win 25-17.

Pfeiffer had a handful of runs in game four, including a 7-0 spurt to push the lead to 20-12. EMU made a late charge to get within two before the Falcons closed the door with a 25-22 win.

Coto led all players with 13 kills and added four block assists, although the men struggled to really get their blocking in place. Barry had 36 assists.

Nolan Prock (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) led all players with a whopping 19 digs.

Moise was named to the All-Classic Team for Eastern Mennonite. The outside hitter led the Royals in kills in three of the four matches at the Classic and finished with 50, averaging 3.1 kills per game. He also had 14 block assists and 30 digs.

After going 2-2 over the two days of the Hampton Inn & Sleep Inn EMU D-II/D-III Classic, the Royals jump right into a busy week as they play four matches from Tuesday through Sunday. The men start things out with a road date at Mt. Olive on Tuesday before hosting Metro opponent Lancaster Bible on Thursday.
