Box Score Playing two games in two days is hard enough. Going into double overtime of the second game of a roadtrip makes it even tougher. Even with those cards stacked against them, the Eastern Mennonite women still had a lead midway through the second OT before Guilford took the momentum and the win, 94-86.
Friday night the Royals took care of Emory & Henry, 81-61, and then continued the road swing Saturday morning by driving to Greensboro, NC. Guilford and EMU traded leads early in the game before the Quakers surged to a 41-36 edge at halftime.
The Royals scored the first four points of the second and eventually led by as many as three. Guilford later scored six unanswered to grab the lead.
With 50 seconds left in regulation, the Quaker lead was at five, 72-67, after a Brittany Atwater three pointer.
Shandell Taylor (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) started the comeback. The sophomore drove to the hoop and trimmed the lead to three with a layup with 37 remaining.
After Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) got a steal, the Quakers fouled Stephanie Rheinheimer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) on a three point attempt with 12 seconds showing. The freshman calmly nailed all three tosses, tying the score at 72-72.
Atwater then got fouled on a shot with two seconds left, but missed both free throws and the game went into overtime.
EMU scored first in the first overtime, but Guilford reversed a three-point edge. Then, with the Royals trailing by one, Rheinheimer drilled a three pointer with nine seconds left putting them ahead 81-79.
But the Quakers got another big play from Atwater, as she was fouled with one second showing on the clock and made both free throws to force the second OT.
Eastern Mennonite scored four straight to overcome a Guilford lead early, as Rheinheimer scored off a screen to make it 85-83 with 3:34 left.
GC scored the next seven points, however, putting a big dent in EMU's hopes with 1:39 to play. The Royals couldn't buy a shot down the stretch despite seven offensive rebounds in the 2nd OT. The Quakers, meanwhile, went 4-5 from the floor and 4-4 from the line to seal the win, 94-86.
Rheinheimer led EMU with 18 points as she hit four triples. Danielle Rittenhouse (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Ygarza had the best game of her young EMU career with a game high 15 rebounds along with nine points. Kori Penick (Lynchburg, Va./Virginia Episcopal) had 15 counters and Kala Yoders (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) added 12.
The women were outshot 44% to 39%, but were 6-11 from long range. EMU was also 26-36 from the free throw line and had 21 offensive boards to go with a 51-46 rebounding edge.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Royals, dropping them to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU hosts Hollins on Tuesday, Jan. 18, before starting a three-game road swing.
