Men Close Year With 3-1 Loss At Randolph

Box Score

The Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team wrapped up its 2010 season Saturday night in a way it had not planned - playing the spoiler. Scoring goals was a problem all year for the Royals and they entered their final game having already been eliminated from making the postseason tournament. The men were hoping to damage the positioning of their opponent on the road, but Randolph had the edge and beat EMU 3-1.

Eastern Mennonite controlled the first five minutes of the game before the WildCats took over. In the 10th minute, Randolph scored on a breakaway.

The men got an equalizer in the 22nd minute. As they pressed on an attack, the WildCats headed the ball away but it went into their own goal, knotting the score at 1-1.

Seven minutes later the home team got back in front with a goal on a one-timer to make it 2-1, which is where the score stayed into halftime.

The Royals had some looks in the second half, but most of the shots went wide. Randolph added another insurance goal in the 74th minute, producing the final 3-1 margin.

EMU was outshot 17-8 in the loss and 13-5 in shots on goal. Mitchell Leap (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and Jay Shearer (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) each had a pair of shots.

Hayden Miller (New Market, Va./Stonewall Jackson) made his first start of the season in goal and had 10 saves for the Royals.

The loss closes the 2010 season for the men at a disappointing 3-14-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. It was their least amount of wins since going 2-13-1 in 1987.
