Field Hockey Women Pick Up Second ODAC Win
Senior Alyssa Derstine netted two goals against Bridgewater including the eventual game winner.
The Eastern Mennonite field hockey team traveled to nearby Bridgewater College Wednesday afternoon for their second ODAC match of the season. The Lady Royals jumped ahead to a 4-1 lead and held off a late charge by the Eagles to win 4-3.
Senior Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) got things rolling with an unassisted goal in the 5th minute of play. But Bridgewater came right back and tied the game on a goal by Christina Pybus.
EMU then took control of play in the half and popped in two more goals for a 3-1 lead. Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) and Jessica Blanks (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) each scored for the women.
In the second, Derstine scored her second goal at 45:28 to give the Lady Royals a three-goal edge. EMU continued to thwart the Eagles until late in the game.
Pybus scored her second goal at 63:21, on a shot which deflected off goalie Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) but still rolled into the goal. With two minutes left in the game, the Eagles got a goal from Leah Cossentino to suddenly sneak within one point.
The Lady Royals got back on the attack as the clock wound down. The women couldn't net another goal, but they could waste out the remaining time to seal the 4-3 win.
EMU outshot Bridgewater 15-8 and had more corners, 7-4. Nolt had four saves in the win.
The win brings the Lady Royals to 3-5 on the season and 2-0 in ODAC play. They next play Saturday at 4:00pm when Elizabethtown visits Harrisonburg.
