The Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins improved to 19-9 overall on the season and 7-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference following a softball sweep over the Eastern Mennonite University Lady Royals Saturday afternoon by game scores of 2-1, and 2-1.
EMU falls to 9-15 on the year, 3-9 in the conference.
Junior infielder
Nicole Shelton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) went 2-for-3 in game two for EMU while
Jessica Kowalski (Melville, NY/Half Hollows Hill) was 1-for-1 with a run scored in game one.
The Lady Royals were unable to string an offensive attack together in games one or two thanks to a dominate pitching performance from VWC starter Brittaney Brown. The junior righty pitched both games for the Marlins, holding EMU to a combined 10 hits and two runs over 14 innings of action. Brown picked up her ODAC leading 17th win of the year in game two, striking out five batters in seven innings of work.
Lost in the defeats were solid pitching efforts from EMU hurlers
Misty Judd (Luray, Va./Luray),
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley), and
Nicole Wade (Madison Heights, Va./Liberty Christian). Judd started game one, scattering seven hits over four innings, while Fraysher held down the VWC offense over the next two innings to keep the Lady Royals close. In game two Fraysher started and went three innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. Wade then came in relief and again kept the Marlin offense at bay over the last three innings, allowing only a hit while striking out three batters.
Sophomore outfielder
Brittany Caricofe (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) had one hit in one at-bat, scoring a run.
The Lady Royals will now travel to Ashland, Va., to take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon in an ODAC double header on Sunday, April 5, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
