Eastern Mennonite University plated a single run in each of the first two innings and held off a late charge by Roanoke College to collect a 3-1 softball win in the second day of competition at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Lady Royals will now play Virginia Wesleyan College at 5 p.m., on field 1, at the James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Va.
Roanoke ends the 2009 season with a 24-11 overall record.
Sophomore outfielder
Jessica Blosser (Crimora, Va./Wilson Memorial) led off the game with a solo shot that slipped just inside the left-field foul line for her third home run of the season. Blosser later added a single to finish 2-for-3 on the day.
The player of the game for the Lady Royals though was freshman pitcher
Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham Co.). Lee held a potent Maroon lineup to only five hits through six innings and ended up giving up an unearned run on seven hits while striking out six batters. Lee also did damage at the plate for EMU as she was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Lee scored Blosser on an RBI single in the second inning and then later touched home plate on a pinch-hit single to left-field by sophomore
Jessica Sullivan (Midlothian, Va./Manchester).
Sophomore outfielder
Jessica Kowalski (Melville, NY/Half Hollows Hill) was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt in the win.
Jessica Zeman reached base three times in four trips to the plate for Roanoke, scoring once. Kelsey Ruitenberg was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The Lady Royals forced Roanoke starting pitcher Clarissa Norwich out of the game in the first inning as EMU had two runners reach following the Blosser home run. Gretchen Wolfe entered the contest and got the next batter to retire the side.
Wolfe pitched the next 4 1/3 innings for Roanoke, allowing two unearned runs on six hits while striking out three.
Janie Holmes finished out the game, allowing a lead off single before getting the next three batters to close out the top half of the seventh inning.
EMU appeared poised to hold Roanoke scoreless in the contest until a Lady Royal fielding error allowed the home team back into the contest. Back-to-back singles by Felicia Lowery and Ruitenberg plated one run and brought senior pitcher
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) in from the designated player role. Fraysher toed the rubber and got the next batter to pop out to shortstop, giving the Maroons only one out to work with. The next batter, Sarah Caudle, worked a walk to load the bases but Fraysher was able to get the following batter to hit into a fielder's choice with the runner coming from second to third being called for interference on the play, sealing the win.
Fraysher picked up her first save of the season, going 2/3 of an inning and issuing a free pass.
