Eastern Mennonite had two costly errors which allowed five runs to score as Bridgewater College advances to the winners bracket of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament as the Eagles defeat the Lady Royals 8-1 Friday afternoon in game three of the tournament.
EMU drops to 17-18 overall on the season and will play Randolph College in the losers bracket at 5:45 p.m. Guilford College collected a 4-1 win over Randolph College earlier in the day to slot the WildCats in the losers bracket.
The Lady Royals had a strong performance at the plate from junior outfielder
Brittany Caricofe (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) who went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham Co.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored while
Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va./John Handley) was also 1-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.
Junior pitcher
Nicole Wade (Madison Heights, Va./Liberty Christian) had a better outing than her line indicated. Wade had seven runs cross home plate, only two of which were earned. She struck out one while scattering eight hits over five innings.
Lee finished the game for EMU, allowing one unearned run on two hits while issuing one free pass.
Ashley Gills picked up her 13th win of the year for Bridgewater as she held the Lady Royals to five hits over seven innings, allowing one run and one walk while striking out 10.
Mallory Sandridge was 3-for-4 with two RBI for BC while Lauren Childress went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Eagles went up by five in the second inning as Sandridge delivered a two-RBI single in the inning to cap the scoring. Both runs plated by Sandridge and another run that scored on a EMU fielding error were unearned.
Bridgewater then answered an EMU run in the top of the sixth with a three-spot in the bottom half of the stanza as Drew Rutledge pushed Ann Komara across home plate with the first run of the inning. Then with two outs the Lady Royal defense tallied their second miscue of the game, a costly error that allowed Amber Hoffman and Childress to score the final runs of the game.
Rutledge scored once and had an RBI while Caity Butler had a pair of hits and a run scored in three trips to the plate.
