Roanoke College improved to 12-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and 22-9 overall with a double header sweep over the Eastern Mennonite University softball team Thursday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

Game scores were 4-3 and 5-2.

The two losses drop the Lady Royals to 15-17 overall on the year and 5-11 in the ODAC.

Sophomore outfielder Jessica Kowalski (Melville, NY/Half Hollows Hill) went 1-for-3 in game one with her second home run of the season, a solo shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sophomore catcher Dana Hall (Shenandoah, Va./Page Co.) and sophomore outfielder Brittany Caricofe (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) each had two hits in game one with Caricofe tying a career-high with three steals.

Jessica Zeman was the hitting star for the Maroons in game one, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Kelsey Ruitenberg went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Catcher Felicia Lowrey was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the win.

Roanoke pushed across a run in the top of the first and the game remained 1-0 in favor of the visiting team until the fourth inning shot by Kowalski. Roanoke untied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Ruitenberg. EMU responded in the bottom half of the inning as an RBI single by freshman Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham Co.) and an RBI groundout by Nicole Shelton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) swung the game back to the home team, 3-2.

The Lady Royals came close to sealing the deal in the seventh inning, getting the first batter out on a groundout to the pitcher. Lisa Scruggs laced a double to center in the next at-bat and then pinch-runner Taylor Zahn came around to score on an RBI double by Zeman. Ruitenberg followed with the third straight hit for RC as Zeman rounded third and crossed home plate with the eventual game winning run.

Clarissa Norwich allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits to pick up the complete game win.

Lee struck out seven batters over 5 1/3 innings of relief in game one.

EMU took an early lead in game two as the Lady Royals plated a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Shelton, scoring Megan Viafora (Stanley, Va./Page Co.).

The advantage was short lived for EMU as Roanoke pulled ahead by a run in the top of the third as a two-run opposite field home run by Lowrey put the visting team on top, 2-1. An RBI bunt by senior infielder Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va./John Handley) scored Lee with the tying run in the bottom half of the stanza, notting the score up at two all.

Roanoke closed out the scoring with a three-run fourth inning as Scruggs and Lowrey each had RBIs with the final run scoring on a wild pitch.

Ruitenberg went the distance for Roanoke in game two as she held EMU to only seven hits while striking out eight in route to her eighth win of the season.

Shelton went 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI. Madden was 1-for-3 with an RBI for EMU.

The Lady Royals will now finish up the 2009 regular season on the road as EMU travels to Emory, Va., on Saturday, April 18, for an ODAC double header with Emory & Henry College, beginning at 2 p.m.
