The Eastern Mennonite University softball team snapped a seven-game losing streak in game one, 5-1, but came up on the short end of a 6-2 decision in game two as the Lady Royals split with Randolph College Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
EMU now stands at 6-12 on the year and 1-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Randolph is now 9-7 overall, 3-5 in the ODAC.
Sophomore
Jessica Sullivan (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) was a combined 3-for-4 with a run scored in the two-game set.
Misty Judd (Luray, Va./Luray) pitched in both games, shutting down the WildCats for one inning of relief in game one while going six innings in game two, allowing only two unearned runs on five hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
Nicole Shelton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in game one while
Allison Painter (Steeles Tavern, Va./Riverheads) had the big hit for the Lady Royals in game two, driving in a pair with an RBI single through the right-side in the bottom of the fourth.
Teresa Dalton did yeomen work for the WildCats, pitching all 14 innings in the circle. Dalton picked up her team leading fifth win of the year in game two, allowing two runs on seven hits in the complete game effort.
Lindsey Cross was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI including her third home run of the season. Nichole Smith also recorded her third home run of the year in game two while Sarah Montgomery was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Each team pushed across a run in the first inning with EMU plating their run on an RBI single by Shelton, scoring
Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham). The Lady Royals then added another run in the home half of the second inning on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder
Jessica Blosser (Crimora, Va./Wilson Memorial) to take a 2-1 lead.
The small cushion was all EMU starting pitcher, senior
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) needed. The school record holder in career wins tallied her 36th victory, going six innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out a season-high eight batters.
Lee went 1-for-2 with a run scored in game one.
In the second game of the double header the WildCats struck early and often as Cross and Smith connected for two-run home runs in the first inning.
Spotted a 4-0 lead, Dalton kept the Lady Royals at bay through three innings before a sharp single through the right-side of the infield by Painter scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth. EMU then loaded the bases with two outs as Blosser singled up the middle. Dalton was then able to get out of the jam without allowing further damage by getting the final out on a ground out to short, keeping the score at 4-2, Randolph.
EMU tried to work a little "one-out magic" in the bottom of the seventh inning as freshman
Megan Viafora (Stanley, Va./Page Co.) singled to left-field. Dalton again shut down the Lady Royal offense, getting the final two outs on a flyout and groundout/interference, respectively, to seal the Randolph win.
Blosser went 2-for-3 in game two for EMU.
The Lady Royals will now head on the road as they travel to Emory, Va., for a double header with the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Saturday, March 28, beginning at 2 p.m.
