Guilford College opened up a tough Old Dominion Athletic Conference road trip with a pair of conference victories over the Eastern Mennonite University softball team Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. Game scores were 6-3 in game one, and 4-1 in game two.

The Quakers now stand at 11-7 overall on the year and 3-1 in the ODAC. EMU falls to 5-9 on the season, 0-4 in the conference.

Game one saw the Quakers and Lady Royals battle through a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth inning. Guilford put a runner on for Kelly Hale who promptly launched her second home run of the season to put the visiting squad up 2-0. GC added another run on an RBI single by Kimberly Keys.

The fifth inning was an almost mirror image of the fourth as Guilford added another three runs, this time with two runs scoring on RBI singles and another coming across the plate on an EMU fielding error.

The Lady Royals put up a tally in the bottom half of the inning and then cut the Guilford lead in half on a two-run blast by sophomore outfielder Jessica Blosser (Crimora, Va./Wilson Memorial). The three-run deficit was too much for EMU to overcome as Guilford starting pitcher Jessica Burcham picking up her fourth win of the season in the complete game effort.

Sophomore shortstop Allison Painter (Steeles Tavern, Va./Riverheads) had a hit and scored twice in two official at-bats.

EMU was held to only four hits in the second game as the Quakers scored a run in both the first and third innings, before adding a pair of scores in the top of the fifth.

Jordan Sanford went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in game two. Ami Hutcherson also had three hits in four at-bats with an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out five.

Shelby Bowser went the distance for Guilford, allowing a run on five hits while striking out six in picking up her first win of the year.

The Lady Royals will look to rebound tomorrow, Sunday, March 22, as they host the Hornets of Lynchburg College at 2 p.m., on Gehman Field.
