Bridgewater College improved to 12-0 to start the 2009 season as the Eagles swept a Old Dominion Athletic Conference double header over the Eastern Mennonite University softball team Wednesday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va., by game scores of 5-1, and 7-1.

The loss drops EMU to 5-7 on the year. The two-game set was the opening conference series for both teams.

Nicole Wade (Madison Heights, Va./Liberty Christian) went a combined 3-for-5 for EMU. Wade also pitched three innings in relief in game two, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out one.

Senior pitcher Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) pitched a combined six innings between the two games, allowing only four hits and one unearned run.

Junior third baseman Nicole Shelton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) went 1-for-3 with an RBI while sophomore outfielder Jessica Blosser (Crimora, Va./Wilson Memorial) had a hit and a run scored in three trips to the plate in game two.

Bridgewater pitcher Becky Schmidt pitched a complete game for the Eagles in game two, allowing only the one run on seven hits while striking out nine. Game one starting pitcher Ashley Gills was equally impressive in the complete game effort, allowing only one run on five hits with five strike outs.

Local product Hillary Rees went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game one. Lauren Childress was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in game two for BC.

EMU scored first in game one as freshman Lisa Lee (Buckingham, Va./Buckingham) launched her first collegiate home run to start the game. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the second when BC put up three runs on two hits with Mallory Sandridge delivering the big blow with a RBI single, plating Leah Cossentino and Drew Rutledge.

BC added another run in the third and in the fourth to close out the scoring.

The bats remained cold for the Lady Royals in the second game as the team tried to shake off a full week of rust. EMU, which had not played a game since March 7, in Orlando, Fla., knocked out seven hits in the second game, yet again fell victim to another solid BC pitching effort.

The Eagles put up a five-spot in game two as two RBI singles from Emily Morris and Caity Butler and an RBI triple off the bat of Childress. The Lady Royals were able to scratch a run across the board in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Shelton, scoring Blosser. Senior infielder Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va./John Handley) followed with a double, putting runners at second and third with two outs. Gills got out of the jam by striking out the next batter to end the threat.

BC's junior righty did the rest herself, holding the EMU offense to only two hits over the next three innings to seal the win.

The Lady Royals will host their first home series of the year this coming Saturday, March 21, as they welcome in the Hornets of Lynchburg College for a 1:30 p.m., ODAC double header.
