Emory & Henry College shot 51 percent from the floor in the first half (15-of-29) and used 11 three-pointers to upset the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball team, 74-59, Friday night in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Wasps improve to 7-12 on the season and 5-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The loss drops EMU to 12-8 overall, 7-8 in the conference.
"We committed too many turnovers tonight and they shot the heck out of the ball," explained head coach Kevin Griffin following the loss. "That has been our story the past couple of games. We got out-rebounded and they hit 11 three-pointers. Its tough, were just in this funk right now and we need to find a way to get out of it."
Emory & Henry was paced by Alex Lyons who led the squad with 17 points, including a 5-of-6 line from behind the arc. Sarah Petty had 15 points and seven assists for the Wasps while Christina Howard came off the bench and added 14 points. Howard was also 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Brittany Snyder (Raphine, Va./Riverheads) led EMU with 16 points.
Danielle Scott (Summit, NJ/Summit) and
Miranda Wolfe (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) had 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Wasps held a slim lead throughout much of the first half. EMU never trailed by more than six points in the stanza, with the two teams battling through eight ties. Emory & Henry brought a five-point lead (34-29) into the locker room after following two missed EMU jumpers with a bucket from Petty and a long ball by Howard.
Howard had two three-pointers in the first half and ended with six points.
In the second frame, EMU tied the game for the ninth time as a Scott jumper and a three from Snyder made the score 34 all. The Lady Royals added four more points, taking a 38-34 lead with 17:30 remaining. The EMU advantage quickly dissipated as a three-pointer from Lyons and a jumper by Brittany Rogers gave the game back to the visiting team.
Following another Scott jumper, Samantha Horner ignited a 9-0 run for E&H with Petty and Howard also adding buckets. The Wasp lead grew to 11 before a brief run by EMU dropped its deficit to seven (53-46, 10:45). The flood gates then opened up on the Lady Royals as Emory & Henry poured on the offense, sinking two three-pointers and hitting a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. A basket by Rogers and another three from Lyons gave the visiting squad their biggest lead of the game at 20 points (73-53, 3:28 remaining).
Tuesdee Woods had 10 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists for Emory & Henry in the win.
Brieana Burrs (College Park, Md./Montrose Christian) had six points off the bench for EMU.
The Lady Royals will look to get back on track tomorrow as they host the Quakers of Guilford College at 4 p.m., with an EMU men's volleyball match immediately following the women's game at 7 p.m.
