The Eastern Mennonite University women's volleyball team fell victim to back-to-back 3-0 losses at the hands of Lynchburg College and the Catholic University of America Friday night, in Yoder Arena.

In the first match against Lynchburg the Lady Royals were defeated by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-13. Against CUA, EMU fell by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-17.

The Hornets were able to defeat EMU thanks in part to a host of players with five kills or more following the contest. Elena Kritter led the team with seven kills, two service aces, and 10 digs while Michelle Boucher, Ashley Stokes, and Erin Heffelfinger each had five kills for LC.

Kristina Giordano registered 14 assists, two service aces, and four digs while Savannah Tinsley had six service aces in the match.

EMU was led by sophomore Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va./Eastern Mennonite), and Kathryn Taylor (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville). Each player had four kills with freshman Christine Bottles (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) notching eight digs and nine assists.

Junior Laura Stoltzfus (Parnell, Ia./Iowa Mennonite) had four digs and two service aces in the loss.

In the second match of the day for EMU the Lady Royals went up against the Cardinals of CUA. Catholic jumped out to a 25-17 win in set one, with the home team battling back in the second set. EMU pulled to only three points shy of tying Catholic before the Cardinals pulled away thanks to a solid game from Lynn Brown who tallied a team high 10 kills in the match.

Michaela Carroll had 23 assists and four service aces for CUA with Katy Ferris leading the team with 13 digs.

EMU freshman Hannah Artz (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led the Lady Royals with five kills. Freshman Rebecca Breeden (Luray, Va./Page Co.) had seven digs.

The Lady Royals will now host North Carolina Wesleyan at 12 p.m., on Saturday, August 30, in the second day of competition of the EMU Tournament.
