Lady Royals Softball Splits Series with Roanoke

The Eastern Mennonite University softball team played a double header with Roanoke College as the two teams battled to a double header split with EMU taking the first game 4-2, but falling in the second game 4-3.
EMU is now 22-9 overall and 8-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Roanoke stands at 22-6 on the year and 7-3 in the conference. Both games were played at the Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Va., the site of the 2008 ODAC Softball Tournament.
Sophomore
Nicole Shelton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) was 2-for-4 with a run scored in game one while senior
Miranda White (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior
Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va./Page Co.) and junior
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) combined to hold the Maroon bats to only seven hits through seven innings with Viafora pitching 2 2/3 innings to start the game while Fraysher completed the final 4 1/3 inings, allowing two walks and a hit to pick up her seventh win of the season. Nicole Wade (Madison Heights, Va./Liberty Christian) are all tied for the team lead in wins as Fraysher and Viafora each hold the EMU career record for wins with 34.
Erin Ruitenberg was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the first game for Roanoke.
In game two the Lady Royals trailed by four heading into the top of the sixth inning when EMU pushed two runs across in the inning to cut the Maroon lead in half. Freshman first baseman
Jessica Sullivan (Midloathian, Va./Manchester) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for EMU as Viafora and Fraysher again combined to hold the Maroons scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth inning. EMU scored one run in the seventh before Roanoke clinched the win with a tag at second base following an EMU base hit.
Sophomore outfielder
Brittany Caricofe (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Senior
Anna Coleman (Fairfield, Va./Rockbridge) was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single and a run scored.
Hillary Hudgins had three hits in four trips to the dish for Roanoke with a run scored. Kelsey Ruitenberg went 2-for-2 with, scoring one run while driving in one in the win.
The Lady Royals will return home this weekend as they host the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Saturday, April 5, for a 1:30 p.m. double header.
