Pitching Duels Give Edge to #9 Hornets in Softball Double Header

#9 Lynchburg College was on the winning end of two pitching duels as the Hornets swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double header over the Eastern Mennonite University softball team Sunday afternoon.
Freshman first baseman
Jessica Sullivan (Midloathian, Va./Manchester) went 3-for-3 in game one, driving in the Lady Royals only run as starting pitcher
Nicole Wade (Madison Heights, Va./Liberty Christian) went four innings, allowing one run on three hits with junior
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va./Loudoun Valley) pitched two innings in relief.
Lynchburg starting pitcher Barbie Miles went the distance as she struck out three in seven innings of work to pick up the win. The Hornets are ranked ninth in the latest
National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 coaches poll.
Brittany Allsop went 1-for-3 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Sarah Spicer crossed home plate after reaching base on a double.
In the second game of the day the Lady Royals were again on the short end of a strong pitching performance as senior
Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va./Page Co.) and Katie Bruce battled it out in the circle for almost nine full innings until the Hornets were able to push across the winning run in the bottom half of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Duguay, scoring Bruce.
Viafora finished with a pitching line that showed only three runs, two earned, on six hits in 8 2/3 innings pitched with a strike out as she also went 2-for-4 from the dish with a a run scored and an RBI.
Junior infielder
Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va./John Handley) had two hits in four trips to the plate for EMU.
The Lady Royals will try to break back into the winning column as they host the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Tuesday, April 2, in a non-conference double header scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
