Four Royals scored in double figures as the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team won its second straight game following a 86-75 win over Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon in Yoder Arena.

The win gives the Royals a 6-12 mark overall and a 3-9 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while the Tigers fall to 10-9 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

Freshman guard George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) led the team with a career high 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field including a 4-for-6 mark from behind the arc. Senior forward Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va./James Wood) had 18 points, seven rebounds, and tied a career high with five assists.

Turner King, who entered the game averaging almost 20 points per game, led all scorers with 33 points while Troy Kaase had another 11 points and eight boards for the visiting Tigers.

Neither team was able to pull away in the first half with the lead changing hands a total of eight times. EMU gained a three point lead on a trey from senior guard Jered Lyons (Takoma Park, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) with 1:55 remaining in the half. The Tigers countered with two free throw shots from King and then following a turnover by EMU, went ahead by two on a layup and one from Jyri Laasko. With only three seconds remaining the Royals raced down the court with Parkes hitting the game tying jumper before time expired to send the teams into the locker room knotted at 40.

Johnson had a team high 14 points in the half with senior center Corey Bailey (Centreville, Va./Brentsville District) adding four points and three rebounds.

Hampden-Sydney went back on top to start the second half before the Royals turned the table and tied the game back at 42. The half started to mirror the first frame with neither team able to pull away until the momentum of the game swung towards the home team on a slam dunk from Baily off an assist from Lyons with 17:50 on the clock. EMU went up by two with that dunk and then added to their lead as an 8-0 run was punctuated by a layup from freshman forward Orie Pancione (Augusta, WVa./Hampshire).

The deficit for Hampden-Sydney eventually grew to 13 as a jumper by Johnson with 8:39 remaining gave the Royals their biggest lead of the game at that time. The Tigers did not go away quietly as King and Drew Prehmus helped bring HSC back from a 17 point deficit to only nine points away from tying the game (2:56 on clock). The EMU lead dropped down to eight on a layup from King (1:57 remaining) before the Royals were able to ice the win on free throw shots from sophomore guard Austin Twine (Dublin, Va./Pulaski Co.), Parkes, and Johnson.

Bailey finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots for EMU with freshman guard D.J. Hinson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) adding 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Pancione had six rebounds and three steals off the bench.

Byron Lawton scored 10 points with three assists for the Tigers.

EMU shot 52 percent from the floor overall for the game compared to 44 percent for Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers did out rebounded the Royals 37-31.

Randolph College will be the next team to invade Yoder Arena on Wednesday, February 6, as the Royals will clash with the WildCats at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game. Randolph will formerly be introduced as a member of the ODAC next season.
