Big Second Half by Randolph-Macon Gives Yellow Jackets 82-55 Win

Randolph-Macon College scored 51 points in the second half in route to a 82-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win Wednesday night over the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team in Yoder Arena.

The Yellow Jackets, who are tied for 28th in the D3Hoops.com coaches poll, improve to 19-4 overall and 13-3 in the ODAC while the Royals fall to 8-16 on the season and 4-13 in the conference.

Freshman guard George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) had a team leading 16 points with senior center Corey Bailey (Centreville, Va./Brentsville District) pulling down 13 rebounds while tallying three blocks.

Randolph-Macon had three players score 18 points with Justin Short, Danny Jones, and Jordan Brown each leading the visiting Yellow Jackets. Jeremy Dixon and Boris Valera were tough on the boards as each grabbed 11 rebounds with RMC out rebounding EMU 51-41.

"We did not play our style of game at all," commented EMU head coach Kirby Dean. "They out rebounded us and were able to get those second chance opportunties."

EMU grabbed a one point lead with 16:26 on the clock on a trey by Johnson, but the Yellow Jackets and Valera responded with a basket of their own as the visiting team pulled out to a 12 point advantage with just under 10 minutes left in the first. The lead grew to 14 before EMU closed to six of the Randolph-Macon lead on another Johnson three pointer with 1:36 remaining. The Yellow Jackets tacked on three more points before the conclusion of the half and went into the locker room with a 31-22 lead.

The Royals tried to fight back in the second half but only a few EMU buckets fell as the Yellow Jackets moved their lead back up to double figures for the rest of the half. Randolph-Macon shot 55 percent (22-40) in the seond half compared to 33 percent (11-33) for EMU.

Senior forward Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va./James Wood) recorded 12 points and six rebounds while sophomore guard Austin Twine (Dublin, Va./Pulaski Co.) had eight points, three assists, and a pair of steals.

Dixon finished with nine points for Randolph-Macon.

EMU will now wrap up the season at home on Saturday, February 23, as the Royals host Roanoke College at 7 p.m., in Yoder Arena.
