Ferrum Hands EMU Men's Basketball 85-66 Loss
Junior guard Austin Twine had six points in the second half and was 3-of-3 from the field in a 85-66 loss to Ferrum College Sunday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va., at the Don Glick Classic.
Ferrum College shot 60 percent from the floor in route to a 85-66 non-conference win over the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team Sunday afternoon in Bridgewater, Va., at the Don Glick Classic.
Both teams now stand at 3-2 overall on the season.
EMU was led by
George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) who tallied 16 points in the loss.
LeRoger Parrish (Danville, Va./Tunstall) and
Orie Pancione (Augusta, WVa./Hampshire) each recorded 11 points with Pancione pulling down nine rebounds.
Derek Mitchell led all scorers with 18 points and 13 rebounds in registering his third double-double in five games this season. Keith Crump added another 16 points to the Ferrum attack.
Ferrum College, which served as the home team at the neutral setting, never trailed in the contest as Jerrell Wade laid one in for the first points of the game. Wade's two points was the start of a 6-0 run by Ferrum to begin the game before Parrish put the Royals on the board with a layup (17:57). Another bucket from Pancione cut the deficit to two but the Panthers built the lead back up to four on a layup by Marcus Mayo. A long ball by Johnson cut the deficit back to one for EMU with Ferrum again answering with another layup.
This continued from the 15 minute mark until the sixth minute when the Panthers went up by nine on a Mitchell layup (6:15). The FC lead grew to 11 points on a pair of Mitchell free throws with Christian Waters laying in another bucket to push the advantage to 13. Parrish responded for EMU with a basket in the next series only to have Ferrum continue to press forward and go up by 16 two minutes later. The Panthers carried that 16 point lead into the break with Ferrum shooting 58 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 44 percent for EMU.
The second frame was an almost mirror image of the first as the Panthers and Royals continued to exchange baskets. Ferrum built their lead up to 14 only to have EMU sink a key three-pointer and knock the margin back down to 11. EMU remained in the game thanks in part to the shooting of Johnson and
Austin Twine (Dublin, Va./Pulaski Co.). Twine scored six points in the second half and was 4-of-6 from the field overall. Johnson led the team with eight points.
With EMU down 14, the Panthers began to pull away as layups from Mayo and two from Mitchell made the score 73-55 (8:39). Ferrum then claimed its largest lead of the contest at 21 points when Waters hit one of his two free throw attempts with 7:30 on the clock. The Royals tried to chip off a piece of the lead each time down the court only to have the Panthers answer right back when they got the ball.
The three-pointer, which had helped to propel EMU to their first three victories on the year, disappeared against Ferrum as the Royals went 3-of-14 from behind the arc.
Ferrum received 15 points and six boards from Waters. Mayo was the fourth Panther player to finish in double figures as he had 10 points.
Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) recorded six points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the loss for EMU.
Johnson was also named to the Don Glick All-Tournament Team following the Bridgewater College versus Davenport University game.
Virginia Wesleyan will be the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent to head into Yoder Arena as the Marlins come to town on Saturday, November 29, for the second game of a men/women's basketball double header. The EMU women's basketball team will host the University of Virginia at Wise at 3 p.m., before the men's basketball team hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
