Lady Royals Cruise to ODAC Semifinal Round

The #1 seed Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team completed step one of their journey as the Lady Royals advance to the semifinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament after defeating the #8 seed Sweet Briar College 10-0 Saturday afternoon on the EMU Turf Field.

EMU improves to 13-4 overall on the season and will play Washington & Lee University on Wednesday, November 5, at a time yet to be determined.

Sweet Briar ends its 2008 season with a 5-11 overall record and a 0-7 mark in the ODAC.

The EMU offensive barrage started early in the first period with goals from Allison Byler (Belleville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite), Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) within the first five minutes of the game.

Derstine added two more goals in the contest and now leads the team with 21 goals scored and 50 points. She ranks second in the ODAC in goals scored, goals per game, and points.

Katie Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) and Derstine scored a goal each before the close of the first period to put the home team up 4-0.

In the second frame, the Lady Royals exploded for six more goals with Derstine, Katie Cimini, sister Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township), Samm Collins (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill), and Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) each recording a score for EMU. Linda Cimini had two goals in the period with assists from Sarah Roth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and Denlinger.

Roth finished with two assists for the Lady Royals while Valerie Landis (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown Sr.) assisted on three goals for EMU (Byler, K.Cimini, Derstine).

Denlinger also had two assists in the win.

Madeline Wilson had 20 saves for Sweet Briar.
