Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored her 18th goal of the year in the final minute of the first period with the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team adding two more in the second frame to defeat Randolph-Macon College 3-1 Friday night.
The win boosts the Lady Royals record to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Randolph-Macon falls to 7-9 on the season, 5-2 in the ODAC.
"We came out slow in the first period but the score right before the half gave us some momentum," commented head coach Brenda Bechler. "This was a big win for us to close out the regular season as we head into the ODAC Tournament."
Randolph-Macon came out attacking the net early in the first period. Mary McCarthy put the visiting team ahead with her team leading eighth goal of the season in the sixth minute of play. EMU tried to respond but senior goalkeeper Ashley Crouch saved seven shots from possibly tying the game. As the period drew to a close the Lady Royals got a penalty corner with 31 seconds remaining. Derstine took the tip from
Sarah Roth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and slammed the backboard of the goal to tie the match at one all.
Following the half, the Lady Royals came out pressing the Yellow Jacket defense as EMU kept the ball on the visiting side of the field for most of the half. Derstine then got involved in the second goal of the game for EMU as she fed the ball from just inside the circle to
Katie Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) for the score.
Derstine then added another assist as
Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) scored her fourth goal of the year on a penalty corner.
EMU outshot Randolph-Macon 29-3 and held a 18-0 margin in penalty corners.
Crouch finished with 14 saves for RMC.
Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) had one save for EMU.
The Lady Royals will now await their opponent for the first round of the ODAC Tournament. Game time and place will be released by the conference at a later date.
