Lindsey Spears and Rebecca Leedom each had nine kills to lead the visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins to a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over the Eastern Mennonite University women's volleyball team Tuesday night in Harrisonburg, Va.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-9, and 25-17.

The Marlins, who are ranked third in the ODAC, improve to 16-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

EMU falls to 4-15 on the season, 0-7 in the ODAC.

Nicole Ropp (Iowa City, Ia./Iowa Mennonite) led the team with five kills in six attempts (.833) while also digging out four balls. Christine Bottles (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) registered 12 assists, and four digs in the loss.

Marissa Wood had 26 assists for Virginia Wesleyan. Erin Paton recorded a team leading seven digs.

The Lady Royals had a tough time against a potent Marlin attack in the first two sets. Virginia Wesleyan went ahead in set one 16-9 on a kill by Lauren Gaca. Attack errors by the Lady Royals and a kill by Spears closed out the set for VWC.

In the second set, the Marlins went up 20-9 as a pair of EMU blocking errors and four kills by Spears eventually gave the game to Virginia Wesleyan. EMU tied the third and final set at five all, but the visiting Marlins were too strong as they went on a 4-0 run late in the set (23-16) to seal the match.

Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had four kills and a solo block for EMU.

The Lady Royals will now head on the road as EMU travels to Bluffton, Ohio, to compete in a Tri-Match against Goshen College and host Bluffton.
