Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) scored twice in the second period as the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team won a 2-0 decision over Virginia Wesleyan College during Homecoming weekend at EMU.
The Lady Royals, now 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, sit in second place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, behind Randolph-Macon College. Lynchburg (3-1) is in third place.
The two goals by Derstine give her 14 for the season, tops on the team and only one behind her total from 2007. Derstine is in second place in the conference behind Allie Weir of Lynchburg in goals scored and goals per game (1.00).
Neither team was able to strike in the first frame as both EMU and Virginia Wesleyan had scoring opportunities midway through the period. Chelsea Baker made two saves in the 10th minute of the game as she stopped shots by Derstine and
Valerie Landis (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown Sr.).
The Marlins had a shot in the 23rd minute, off a corner, roll just wide of the post.
In the second period Derstine got the home team on the board as she struck with a blast into the left-side of the net off a corner by
Hailee Rittle (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon).
Derstine then sealed the win for EMU in the 57th minute as she connected for an unassisted goal.
EMU out-shot VWC 28-4, and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Lady Royals next game will be on Saturday, October 18, as they travel down to Sweet Briar, Va., to take on the Vixens at 4:30 p.m.
