Bienemann Leads Washington & Lee to 72-60 Men's Basketball Win

Greg Bienemann tied a career high with 36 points as the Washington & Lee Generals defeated the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team 72-60 Wednesday night in Lexington, Va.
The win moves Washington & Lee to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while EMU falls to 4-12 on the year and 1-9 in the conference. The Generals have now won five straight games for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
Senior forward
Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va./James Wood) scored a team high 16 points along with six rebounds while senior center
Corey Bailey (Centreville, Va./Brentsville District) had six points and a career high 16 rebounds. Following the 16 points tonight, Parkes is now ninth on the EMU career scoring list with 1,312 points and is only 39 points away from claiming eight place overall.
Chris McHugh also scored in double figures for the Generals and added 10 points to the W&L attack along with the 36 from Bienemann. Washington & Lee will now head on the road as they take on Roanoke on Saturday, February 2, with EMU also staying on the road as they visit Lynchburg College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
EMU kept the game close in the first half as the Royals held the Generals to 35 points with Bienemann doing most of the damage as the senior center chipped in 18 points in the half. The visiting Royals trailed by 10 with 9:30 on the clock with layups by freshman wing
Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) and Bailey cutting the deficit to six. The Generals responded and shot the lead back up to eight points before heading into the locker room with a 35-27 advantage.

The Generals opened the second half on a scoring spree as the home team eventually went up by as much as 14. EMU countered late in the half with on a dunk from Bailey to trim the lead to eight (50-42, 9:10 on clock). Ben Goetsch and Washington & Lee quickly responded in the Generals next possession as the sophomore forward hit a big trey from the top of the key to give W&L an 11 point advantage. The Royals moved to within nine of tying the game again late in the half (1:42 on clock) but it was too late to complete the comeback as McHugh and Isaiah Goodman hit crucial free throws in the games final seconds to ice the win for Washington & Lee.
Bienemann had another 18 points in the second half with Goetsch adding six points off the bench for the home team. Phillips finished the half scoring 10 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting from the field with three boards for EMU.
EMU out rebounded Washington & Lee 46-32 with the Generals shooting 46 percent (23-of-50) compared to 31 percent (19-of-61) for the Royals.
