Senior forward Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va./James Wood) set a new scoring record at Eastern Mennonite University with his career night against Emory & Henry. Parkes led all scorers with 44 points along with 16 rebounds in a 154-146 overtime loss to the Wasps.

The 154 points scored by Emory & Henry sets a new Old Dominion Athletic Conference top mark. The Wasps had previously held the top spot in a 2005 game against Thomas More when they scored 150 points. E&H record now stands at 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference while EMU falls to 4-10 on the year and 1-7 in the ODAC.

The 44 points and 16 rebounds both set new career highs for Parkes while the five assists tie a career high set against Ferrum College last year.

Seven Royals scored in double figures with freshman guard George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) scoring 16 points and 11 assists for the double double with freshman Rashawn Hannah (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) adding another 21 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the field. The 146 points scored by EMU sets a new record for points in a game with overtime. The single game record of 130, set back in 1970, agianst Washington Bible was for a game without overtime.

There was 25 total points scored in the first five minutes of the contest with neither team straying from its usual up-tempo style of play. The visiting Wasps held the lead for only one minute in the first half with the Royals able to match Emory & Henry shot for shot. EMU shot 70 percent from the floor in the first half, a season high, on 26-of-37 shooting. Parkes was only two rebounds shy of a double-double as he poured in 20 points while grabbing eight boards.

Josh Lee and Kyle Huckins each scored in double figures for E&H with Huckins pacing the squad with 15 and Lee adding 11. EMU held a five-point lead (64-59) heading into the locker room.

Following a trey by Josh Cunningham to open the scoring for Emory & Henry in the second half, EMU began to pull away with a layup from sophomore guard Austin Twine (Dublin, Va./Pulaski Co.) giving the Royals a 10 point advantage with 17:35 remaining.

The lead shrunk to seven and eventually five as another three-pointer from Cunningham and two free throws by Huckins cut the Royals lead in half. EMU responded and again pushed their lead back up into double figures with guards Jason Rutschman (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetort) and Devon McRae (Altavista, Va./Altavista) each contributing to the Royals attack. Rutschman dropped in two free throw shots (13:26 on the clock) and following a basket from Emory & Henry, McRae added his own pair on a fast break layup giving EMU a 12 point cushion.

Rutschman tied a career high with 11 points along with seven rebounds while McRae had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.

Robert Hudson again helped get Emory & Henry close with another big three-pointer with the Wasps connecting on 14-of-44 from behind the arc in the game. A trey by Johnson gave EMU a six-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining with Emory & Henry continuing to stay within striking distance. The Wasps closed the gap to four with three minutes remaining with EMU trying to slow down the tempo and use up the clock. Emory & Henry then captialized on a second chance shot at another three following a missed try by Jarell Christianson. Camillo Wienz grabbed the loose board off the Christianson shot and swung it out to Hudson who drained the trey from the top of the arc to put EMU ahead by only one. The Wasps forced EMU to the line and after sinking 1-of-2, Emory & Henry charged down the court with Hudson laying in the game-tying basket as time expired.

The Wasps used their expierence in the quick transition game to take a four-point advantage early on in overtime with Christianson adding a pair of layups for E&H. The Royals countered with a layup from Parkes before the Wasp offense kicked into high gear and quickly went ahead by 12 with just under three minutes remaining. Emory & Henry maintained a double digit lead until the final minute of the game when a comeback attempt by EMU fell short.

Junior LeRoger Parrish (Danville, Va./Tunstall) had 16 points for EMU off the bench. EMU shot only 33 percent in the overtime period compared to 66 percent for Emory & Henry.

Hudson led the Wasps with 31 points while Christianson had 22 points and nine boards.

The Royals will now get ready for their second game this weekend as the Quakers of Guilford College come to Yoder Arena on Sunday, January 27, for a 3 p.m., contest.
