Junior forward Carolyn Riley (Warrenton, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) led all scorers with 23 points along with eight rebounds as the Eastern Mennonite University women's basketball moved to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference with a 64-48 win at the expense of Emory & Henry College.

The Wasps fall to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. EMU has won its last four games, all against conference opponents, and has won 10 of its last 11.

"We really played well on both ends, especially in the second half," commented EMU head coach Kevin Griffin. "Our defense was terrific and we got good minutes from our bench. Overall it was total team effort to get this win."

Emory & Henry built a 6-0 lead following the first two minutes of the game with EMU unable to get on the board. When the Lady Royals finally did score their first bucket (16:38 on clock), on a jumper by senior guard Dana Powell (Roanoke, Va./Northside), they opened the flood gates and seven minutes later held a 17-6 lead. Emory & Henry closed the gap to seven before another EMU rally sent the Lady Royals into the locker room with a 13 point lead.

Riley had 10 points in the first half with senior center Jolene Kratz (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) adding another four points. EMU shot only 35 percent from the floor in the first half but was 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and held the Wasps to 18 percent from the floor.

The second frame was all Lady Royals as EMU pushed their lead up to 15 with Riley adding another bucket off an assist from sophomore guard Ebony Dennis (Baltimore, Md./Western). The gap widened to 26 points (8:29 remaining) with Emory & Henry creating a run at the end and closing the deficit to 10 points with 2:54 left. A jumper by Riley and three buckets from Kratz in the final minute of the game iced the win for EMU.

Kratz finished with 12 points and six rebounds for EMU and was 6-of-8 from the field. Dennis had four points and collected a team high 10 boards along with four steals. Senior guard Tara Jones (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) had eight points, five rebounds, and five steals in the win.

Sarah Petty led the Wasps with 14 points and eight rebounds followed by Alex Lyons with 10 points, and 11 boards for the double double.

"I can't say enough about our defensive effort tonight, and this is the second straight night that we have gotten strong defense off our bench, especially Melissa Lewis (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft)," added Griffin.

The Lady Royals will return home next week as they welcome ODAC rival Bridgewater College into Yoder Arena on Tuesday, January 22, at 7 p.m.
