Three-Pointers Give Hampden-Sydney 86-72 Men's Basketball Win

Hampden-Sydney shot 50 percent from behind the arc (10-of-20) on their way to an 86-72 win over the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team Sunday afternoon in the S. Douglass Fleet Gymnasium.
The defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions improve to 8-3 on the season and 2-2 in the conference while EMU, coming off a 92-78 win over Lynchburg Saturday night, fall to 4-6 on the year and 1-3 in the ODAC.
Senior guard
Jered Lyons (Takoma Park, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) came off the bench and led the team with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Freshman guard
George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) had another 13 points and a team high three assists for EMU.
Troy Kaase led HSC with 20 points with Turner King pulling down a team high seven to go along with 18 points in the game.
Both teams battled for the lead in the first seven minutes of the game with eight lead changes occuring until the Tigers grabbed the lead for good with 13:28 on the clock. Drew Prehmus hit the go-ahead trey and had 15 points in the contest on 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
The Tiger lead grew to 16 points before a late charge by EMU closed the gap to nine points as the teams headed into the locker room. Senior forward
Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va./James Wood) finished the game with 12 points and seven boards while freshman guard
D.J. Hinson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) also had scored 12 points for EMU.
The Royals moved to seven points of the Tiger lead on a three-pointer by Johnson before HSC clawed back and pushed the EMU deficit to 12. The visiting Royals continued to stay with Hampden-Sydney, getting the lead down to eight points, before a Turner King jumper gave HSC a double-digit advantage that the home team did not give up.
Senior center
Corey Bailey (Centreville, Va./Brentsville District) had seven points and four boards off the bench for EMU.
The Royals will travel to Ashland, Va., on Wednesday, January 16, as they take on Randolph-Macon College at 7 p.m.
