The Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team scored both of its goals in the final four minutes of the first half as the Lady Royals beat the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins 2-0 Saturday afternoon.

EMU improves to 3-5 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Virginia Wesleyan drops to 2-7 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

The Lady Royals scored their first goal off the stick of sophomore Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) with 2:12 remaining in the first half.

EMU then added another goal with 18 seconds remaining before halftime when freshman Allison Byler (Belleville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite) scored off an assist from senior Lauren Michel (Princess Ann, Md./Holly Grove Christian).

"They (Virginia Wesleyan) took a timeout and then we scored our next two goals within that four minute frame," said EMU coach Brenda Bechler. "Our defense played extremely well and kept up their compsure throughout."

EMU senior Lisa King (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) added, "The win gets us pumped to go up against Washington & Lee next week in a rematch of the semi-finals from last year. Were excited to be back at home and hope to carry this momentum with us against W&L."

Freshman Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) had two saves for EMU.

The Lady Royals will host Washington & Lee on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m.
