Cimini Helps Lady Royals Beat #18 Lynchburg 2-1 in Field Hockey

Freshman Linda Cimini (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) scored twice as the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team beat Lynchburg College 2-1 Friday night in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match-up.

EMU improves to 2-5 overall on the season and 1-0 in the ODAC while defending champion Lynchburg College falls to 5-2 on the year and 0-1 in the conference. The Hornets are ranked 18th in the latest STX/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll.

Lynchburg scored first in the contest as Samantha Howard added her 11th goal this season off an assist from Jessi Bowman to put the Hornets up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 into the second half when Cimini struck for her first goal with the clock at 41:31. Cimini added another goal off an assist from sophomore Alyssa Derstine (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) 5:06 later to give the Lady Royals the lead.

Lynchburg outshot EMU 17-14 with the Lady Royals holding an 8-3 edge in penalty strokes over the Hornets.

Freshman goalkeeper Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) had six saves for EMU. Sarah Cates had five saves for LC.

The last time these two teams met was in the conference championship match in 2006 with Lynchburg College advancing to the NCAA tournament on a Erin Majerowicz penalty stroke.

The Lady Royals next contest will be against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 29, at 1 p.m.
