Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va.) was one out away from a perfect game before Kerri Spaulding knocked a double to right center in game one. Viafora got the next out to seal the 1-0 win with the Lady Royals also taking the second game by a score of 5-1 to sweep the Mary Washington Eagles Thursday afternoon on Gehman Field.
EMU improves to 15-9 overall on the season with Mary Washington dropping to 16-11 overall.
Viafora dominated the Eagles batters in game one as the junior right hander struck out 13 batters in seven innings of work. EMU scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth as junior shortstop
Hayley Shepard (Grottoes, Va.) singled home freshman centerfielder
Brittany Caricofe (Bridgewater, Va.).
Shepard went 2-for-3 in the first game with one RBI.
In game two, Mary Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the third inning before EMU tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on a long solo home run by junior catcher
Miranda White (Verona, Va.). White now leads the team with three home runs this season.
The game remained tied until the sixth when EMU plated four runs thanks in part to two Mary Washington fielding errors and a two-run single from Caricofe to take a 5-1 lead.
Sophomore pitcher
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va.) closed out the complete game getting the final three outs in the seventh inning to pick up the win. Fraysher allowed only one run on five hits while striking out two.
EMU will now travel south to take on the Wasps of Emory & Henry on Saturday, March 31, for a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
