Softball Splits Double Header with Guilford College

The Eastern Mennonite University softball team split a double header with Guilford College Saturday afternoon on Gehman Field with the Quakers winning game one 1-0, while EMU pulled out an 8-5 comeback win in the second game.
The Lady Royals are now 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while the Quakers record stands at 5-17 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Pitching told the story in game one as EMU starting pitcher
Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va.) allowed only one run on seven hits through seven innings while striking out eight but Guilford pitcher Taryn Pulvermuller allowed only three hits through seven innings to out duel Viafora and pick up the win.
The Quakers Kelly Hale drove in the games only run in the first inning, scoring leadoff hitter Ciara Locklear.
The EMU bats again remained dormat in the second game until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lady Royals exploded for seven runs on five hits to pull out the comeback win.
EMU was down 5-1 heading into the inning before second baseman
Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va.) led off the inning with a walk. A single by third baseman
Miranda White (Verona, Va.) brought up Viafora who blasted a three-run home run to cut the Quakers lead to 5-4.
The inning continued as shortstop
Hayley Shepard (Grottoes, Va.) doubled in two more runs while Madden followed with an RBI triple to push the Lady Royals lead to 8-5.
Starting pitcher
Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va.) closed out the game in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.
Shepard went 2-for-4 at the dish for EMU with two runs scored and two RBIs while Madden collected two hits in three trips to the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.
Kelly Guarnieri had a strong day for GC as the sophomore catcher was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Locklear and Pulvermuller each went 2-for-4 with a runs scored in the second game for Guilford.
The Lady Royals take a short break and return to action tomorrow as EMU hosts Lynchburg College at 1:30 p.m. on Gehman Field.
