After battling Emory & Henry and its fast paced offense for 40 minutes on Saturday, the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team was unable to pull out the comeback on Sunday as the Royals fell 84-75 to #24 Guilford College in Yoder Arena.
Guilford, which improves to 19-3 overall and 13-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, was again led by Ben Strong who poured in a game-high 29 points, including 13-of-15 from the free throw line, while also pulling down 16 boards.
Strong was the offensive force for the Quakers in the first half as the junior center notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Snipes had another nine points for GC, which led 37-25 at the break.
EMU celebrated senior day before the start of the contest recognizing forward
Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) and center
Ryan King (Lancaster, Pa.). Sager paced the Royals with his 22 points for the game while also grabbing 12 rebounds to record his sixth double-double of the season. King played valuable minutes for EMU in the second half and helped keep Strong off the boards when the Royals began to mount a comeback.
EMU, trailing by 18 at one point, started to chip away at the Quaker lead with 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Two free-throw shots by Sager and a three-pointer by freshman
John Overstreet (Forsyth, Ga.) helped cut the Guilford lead to six with eight minutes remaining. The Royals continued to put pressure on the Guilford offense and used an up-tempo attack to keep the game close. Guilford though began to pull away as the Quakers continued to knock down their free-throws, sealing the win.
Overstreet finished with 13 points and a career-high seven rebounds. Junior guard
Jered Lyons (Takoma Park, Md.) had another 16 points for EMU which falls to 7-15 overall and 3-13 in the ODAC.
The Royals will now close out the season on the road as EMU travels to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, February 14 for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Yellow Jackets.
