Hampden-Sydney Defeats Royals 78-55

The Hampden-Sydney Tigers shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half to defeat the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team Sunday afternoon in Yoder Arena by a score of 78-55.

Hampden-Sydney improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while EMU falls to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Drew Prehmus scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half as the EMU shot only 32 percent from the floor after entering the half tied at 33. Senior Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) led the Royals with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists on the day.

The Tigers pulled away early in the second half as Prehmus hit a three-pointer with the clock at 17:20 to push the Hampden-Sydney lead to five. Lane Medlin knocked in another basket to increase the lead to seven. Medlin finished the contest with 10 points while Matt Kittrell had another 14 points and seven boards for HSC.

Hampden-Sydney scored 10 unanswered points before the Royals were able to answer back. The Royals cut the lead down to six at the 12:56 mark on a lay-up by freshman Yanni El' DeJesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico). DeJesus ended the game with four points, four assists, and four rebounds off the bench for the Royals.

Prehmus again kept the Royals at bay, hitting another three-pointer with less than seven minutes to play to add to the Tigers lead with Kittrell adding another bucket.

Junior guard Jered Lyons (Takoma Park, Md.) had 11 points and three rebounds for EMU with guard Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va.) chipping in another 10 points.

EMU returns to the court on Saturday, January 13, when the Royals play host to Roanoke College at 7 p.m.
