Lynchburg Ends ODAC Softball Tournament Run for EMU

Junior Caroline Cubbage drove home three runs on two home runs to lead fourth-seeded Lynchburg College to an 8-1 win over sixth-seeded Eastern Mennonite University in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball championship tournament on Saturday at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
LC (28-14), after having dropped its opener 2-1 in 11 innings to Emory & Henry, advanced all the way through the loser's bracket on Saturday to reach Sunday's championship game. After beating EMU (23-18), the Hornets topped third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan 6-3 and eliminated top-seeded Bridgewater 7-5. LC will face 21st-ranked Roanoke (32-5), the two seed, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Hornets got the offense going in the third with a four-run inning. Cubbage (Bridgewater, Va.) then hit her first home run of the day, a two-run shot, as part of a three-run fourth. She added a solo shot in the seventh to close the scoring. EMU's only run came in the third on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Miranda White (Verona, Va.).
Junior Larissa Roscher (Centreville, Va.) earned the victory after allowing one run while scattering five hits while striking out five. Sophomore Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va.) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in two and two-thirds innings.
Cubbage finished with two home runs, two walks, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Sophomore Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, Va.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Brittany Edelen (Aquasco, Md.) was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.
White doubled and drove in the only run for EMU. Sophomore center fielder Anna Coleman (Fairfield, Va.) was 2-for-4.
EMU finishes the season with a school record 23 wins with a roster almost exclusively comprised of freshmen and sophomores.
