EMU Splits Softball Doubleheader with Guilford College

Eastern Mennonite University dropped the first game of a doubleheader by a score of 4-3 against Guilford College but rebounded to record a 3-0 shutout in game two in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball match-up on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

EMU (12-12, 2-4 ODAC) scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to record a 3-0 shutout in the second game. Sophomore Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va.) continued her solid week with a four-hit shutout and eight strikeouts.

Senior Jennifer Evans (Colfax, N.C.) took the loss for GC (4-18, 2-6 ODAC) after allowing three runs, including two unearned, on four hits in three innings of relief. Freshman starter Sara Vaisvilas (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits.

Sophomore catcher Miranda White (Verona, Va.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Lady Royals while five other players had one hit each. Four players had one hit each for the Quakers.

In the first game, freshman Kelly Hale's (Toler, Ky.) two-out bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh gave Guilford a 4-3 victory. Freshman Taryn Pulvermuller (New Egypt, N.J.) tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits to earn the victory. Senior Jennifer King (Reidsville, N.C.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hale doubled, scored twice, and picked up an RBI.

Freshman Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va.) took the loss, pitching six and two-thirds innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits while walking three and striking out three. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore Hayley Shepard (Grottoes, Va.) was 2-for-3 with a home run, her team-leading fourth of the season.

Viafora capped a stellar week for the Lady Royals, going 3-0 on the hill with a 1.67 earned run average. She allowed 16 hits and struck out 16 and recorded EMU's first victory over Lynchburg since 1997. She was also 10-for-23 (.435) at the plate with two doubles, five runs scored, and six RBIs.

EMU will continue ODAC play on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Sweet Briar College.
