EMU Sweeps Shenandoah 7-4 and 9-5 in Softball

Sophomore Natasha Viafora collected five hits and a complete game victory in the pitching circle to lead Eastern Mennonite University to a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah University by game scores of 7-4 and 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, Va.

EMU (11-11) took game one 7-4 in nine innings. Both teams plated one run in the first extra inning in the eighth before the Lady Royals scored three in the ninth, including a two-run single by Viafora (Stanley, Va.), to claim the victory.

Freshman Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va.) earned the victory for the Lady Royals, tossing all nine innings and allowing four runs, one earned, on 10 hits. Sophomore Hayley Shepard (Grottoes, Va.) was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Sophomore Laura Bomberger (Harrisonburg, Va.) was 2-for-5 with a triple, a run, and an RBI. Viafora was 2-for-5 with a run and a pair of RBIs while freshman Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore Tana Bartek (Bethlehem, Pa.) took the loss for Shenandoah (7-11) after allowing seven runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts in nine innings. Sophomore Jessica Bollinger (Springfield, Va.), freshman Catherine Beuerle (Lynchburg, Va.), freshman Ashley Ballentine (Lynchburg, Va.), and freshman Katie Haskins (Montville, N.J.) each had two hits in the game for the Hornets.

In the second game, EMU crossed the plate five times in the first inning, later took a 7-0 lead, and went on to win 9-5. Viafora earned the victory, allowing five runs on seven hits. She was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore Anna Coleman (Fairfield, Va.) was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs while freshman Allison Brunk (Dayton, Va.) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Haskins took the loss for the Hornets with seven runs allowed on eight hits in three innings. Bollinger was 2-for-4 and Beuerle was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

EMU returns to ODAC play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Guilford College.
