Freshman Maureen Murtagh's single in the eighth inning of the second game gave the University of Mary Washington a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite University by scores of 5-0 and 3-2 in non-conference softball action on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

EMU (8-10) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second game with one run in the sixth on an RBI-single by sophomore Natasha Viafora (Stanley, Va.) and a run in the seventh on an RBI base hit by sophomore Anna Coleman (Fairfield, Va.).

Viafora reached third base with one out in the eighth before being caught in a rundown on a ground ball by freshman Mandee Madden (Winchester, Va.). In the bottom of the inning, freshman catcher Abigail Madden (Winchester, Va.) committed an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to allow freshman Catherine Hull (Alexandria, Va.) to reach base and extend the inning. Following a strikeout, Murtagh (Reston, Va.) plated the winning run on an infield single.

Murtagh drove in two runs for the Eagles. Hull was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Senior short stop Erin Rantz (Stafford, Va.) was 2-for-4. Coleman, sophomore third baseman Miranda White (Verona, Va.), and Viafora had two hits each for the Lady Royals.

Sophomore Casey Pherson (Powhatan, Va.) allowed two runs in four innings of relief to earn the victory. Freshman Nicole Foster (Easton, Md.) pitched four scoreless innings to start the contest. Freshman Jamie Fraysher (Waterford, Va.) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in seven and two-thirds innings to take the loss.

In the first game, senior Abbey Wineland (Downingtown, Pa.) pitched a one-hit shutout for UMW with five strikeouts to improve to 5-4. Hull was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Freshman Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, Va.) and Murtagh each homered. Sophomore Ashley Sifer (Holland, Pa.), sophomore Jamie Clevenger (Point Pleasant, N.J.), and junior Lindsey Painter (Alberta, Va.) had two hits each.

EMU travels to Lynchburg College on Tuessday for a 2:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
