Royals Edge 16th Ranked Randolph-Macon in Overtime 80-77

Junior Brad Parkes (Winchester, Va.) put the Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball up by two with less than 20 seconds on the clock and freshman Austin Twine (Dublin, Va.) iced the win knocking in a free throw with four seconds remaining as the Royals defeated the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets 80-77 Saturday night in Yoder Arena.

The Royals improve to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while Randolph-Macon falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Senior Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) and Parkes were again at the helm of the EMU offense. Sager collected 24 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals while Parkes, who also hit a crucial jumper in overtime, contributed 22 points on 11-of-14 from the field, along with a team high seven boards.

Sophomore LeRoger Parrish (Danville, Va.) added another 14 points while freshman John Overstreet (Forsyth, Ga.) came off the bench and recorded 10 points and two steals and helped send the game into overtime for the Royals nailing a jumper with 34 ticks remaining.

EMU lead 36-31 at the break before Randolph-Macon came back in the second half to push the Royals down the stretch. Stephen Sutherland led the charge for the Yellow Jackets with nine of his 11 points in the second half while team points leader Phil Hawley added another eight points.

Hawley finished the contest with 18 points and nine boards for RMC.

Junior guard Jared Lyons (Takoma Park, Md.) had eight points and four assists for EMU.

The Royals now will travel to down the road to take on ODAC foe Bridgewater College on Saturday, December 16, at 7 p.m.
