Lady Royals Reel in Marlins 4-1

Freshman Sarah Roth (Lancaster, Pa.) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Eastern Mennonite University field hockey team past the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins by a score of 4-1 Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match-up.

EMU improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC while VWC fell to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

The Lady Royals held the advantage in shots 22-8 while also taking 10 penalty corners, two of which resulted in goals, while the Marlins tallied seven.

The Lady Royals were able to take a 2-1 goal lead after the first period thanks to a goal by sophomore Meghan Hershey (Paradise, Pa.). Roth assisted on Hershey's goal while also tallying her first goal of the game to open up the contest at the 15:46 mark.

Chrissy Clancey scored the games only goal for VWC on an assist by Laura Weidema thirty seconds before the half.

In the second period, EMU came out firing again as Roth tallied her second goal of the game while senior Kristie Souder (Telford, Pa.) scored her first goal of the game and team leading 11th of the season to put the Lady Royals up 4-1. Sophomore Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa.) assisted on the goal by Souder.

Senior Katie Moyer (Blooming Glen, Pa.) finished the game with two saves for EMU while VWC keeper Megan Koster had nine saves in the loss.

The Lady Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, October 18, against Washington & Lee. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
