Junior first baseman Kristin Lapp drove in three runs to fuel Eastern Mennonite University to a 6-3 victory in the second game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Emory & Henry College on Saturday in Emory, Va. The Lady Royals lost the first game 7-3.

In the first game, E&H (8-11, 2-6 ODAC) plated five runs in the first off EMU (10-11, 4-8 ODAC) sophomore starter Tessa Grubb to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Lady Royals responded with three runs in the second to crawl within 5-3, but the Wasps put the game away with two runs in the fourth inning.

Sophomore third baseman Shannon Pharis went 3-for-4 with four RBI for E&H. Junior Brooke Barker also had three hits and scored twice. Freshman Lauren Birdsell went 2-for-4. Senior starter Julia Molenear earned the victory to improve to 4-6. Freshman Sara Steffey tossed three scoreless innings in relief for the save.

Grubb dropped to 2-6 after surrendering five runs in one inning. Freshman catcher Miranda White went 3-for-4 while freshman shortstop Hayley Shepard was 2-for-4 for EMU.

In the second game, the Wasps jumped out in front with three runs in the first, thanks to a two-run homerun by Birdsell. However, EMU freshman pitcher Natasha Viafora shut down the Wasps the rest of the way and the Lady Royals scored five runs in the fourth to jump on top and win 6-3.

Viafora improved to 3-1 allowing just one earned run in seven innings. Lapp was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Shepard and Grubb each had two hits with Grubb driving in two runs.

Freshman Shannon Harris took the loss for E&H, falling to 4-5 overall after allowing six runs, two earned, in seven innings. Birdsell and junior Rue Atkins had the only hits in game two for the home team.

EMU will host Shenandoah University in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
