EMU Drops Doubleheader to #23 Roanoke 4-2, 11-3

Erin Ruitenberg and Andrea Grans each collected four hits as 23rd-ranked Roanoke College swept both games of a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite University by scores of 4-2 and 11-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball action on Wednesday in Harrisonburg, Va.
In the first game, Roanoke (22-7, 7-1 ODAC) jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Ruitenberg, a freshman catcher, smacked a two-run single and freshman shortstop Whitney Purvis followed with an RBI single.
EMU (9-10, 3-7 ODAC) put on some pressure in the fourth with two runs. Sophomore designated player Emily Lam hit an RBI single and sophomore left fielder Tessa Grubb added a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Lady Royals thought they tied the score with a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Miranda White in the fifth inning, but sophomore center fielder Sabrina Tusing was called out on appeal for leaving early. Junior Ashley Pierce added an RBI single for the Maroons in the sixth to cap the scoring at 4-2.
Freshman Amy Gillis earned the victory and improved to 7-4 with two runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Emily Rackely pitch the final 1 1/3 innings for the save. Ruitenberg was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Purvis and Grams, a junior designated player, also had two hits each.
Freshman Roxanne Martin took the loss for EMU, falling to 2-2 with four runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman shortstop Hayley Shepard and junior first baseman Kristin Lapp had two hits apiece for the Lady Royals.
In the second game, EMU starter Tessa Grubb worked out of a bases-loaded no out jam in the first but surrendered one run in the second and three more in the third. The Lady Royals kept it close at 4-1 until Roanoke struck for seven runs in the sixth inning to break it open.
Lyndsi Craig improved to 10-1 for Roanoke with one run allowed on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Freshman left fielder Sam Higgins was 3-for-3 for the Maroons. Senior second baseman Robin O'Connor was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior first baseman Kim Rowe and Craig each had two hits and two RBI. Ruitenberg, Grams, and freshman center fielder Hillary Hudgins had two hits apiece.
Grubb took the loss for EMU, falling to 2-5 overall. Freshman third baseman Laura Bomberger was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Freshman left fielder and pitcher Natasha Viafora went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
EMU will travel to Emory & Henry College on Saturday, April 9 for a 2:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
