Guilford Topples EMU 101-91 in Men's Basketball

Five players scored in double figures as Guilford College picked up a 101-91 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.

EMU (11-10, 7-8 ODAC) grabbed an early 10-3 lead at the 16:06 mark of the first half. Guilford (13-9, 8-7) responded to take its first lead 23-21 with 11:29 remaining. The teams battled back and forth in a tight first half with GC leading 49-47 at the break.

The game remained tight for much of the early part of the second period. The Quakers led 64-61 at the 12:24 mark before making their push to take charge. The lead quickly grew to 76-66 with 9:57 left. GC led by double digits for much of the rest of the game in recording the 101-91 victory.

Guilford has won three in a row and broke out of a tie with EMU in the ODAC standings. EMU has lost three games in a row and falls into a seventh-place tie in the conference with three games remaining before the tournament.

Freshman guard Ray Edmond led Guilford with a career-high 18 points for the Quakers. Freshman forward Kerry Atkinson had a well-rounded outing with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and three steals. Freshman guard Caleb Kimbrough had a career-best 14 points and three assists. Junior forward Jamel Taylor had a double-double with career-highs of 15 points and 12 rebounds while junior center Genaro Lawhorn added 11 points, four boards, and four assists.

Sophomore forward Jason Sager had his 14th double-double of the season for EMU with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore center Jason Lentz had his second straight double-double and sixth of the season with 16 points and 11 boards. Freshman forward Brad Parkes had 19 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Korey Whiting added 13 points, five boards, three assists, and three steals.

GC shot 52.1% from the floor, shooting better than 50% in each half. The Quakers also hit 11-of-17 three-point field goals and went 16-for-27 from the free throw line. They had 21 assists, nine steals, and nine blocks, including five by forward Ben Strong.

EMU shot 46.5% from the floor and connected on 5-of-17 three-pointers. The Royals went 20-for-29 at the free throw line for 69% accuracy. They also held a 49-36 advantage in rebounds.

EMU will conclude a four-game road trip and play its final road game of the season on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.
