Royals Fall to Yellow Jackets 68-63

Freshman David Carlson had a break-out performance with 23 points as Randolph-Macon College picked up a 68-63 triumph over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Va.
R-MC (6-1, 4-0 ODAC), which entered the game ranked 12th nationally by D3hoops.com, led for most of the first half, built a lead as large as 13, and took a 41-29 advantage into the break. The Yellow Jackets still led by 12, 47-35, with 15:45 remaining when EMU (4-4, 1-3 ODAC) got back-to-back three-point field goals from freshmen guards LeRoger Parrish (Danville, Va.) and Dalany Brown (Lynchburg, Va.) to ignite a 16-4 run to tie the score.
The Yellow Jackets went back up by five before the Royals charged back and eventually took their first lead in 24 minutes, 60-59 with 3:20 remaining. Trailing 61-59, R-MC senior Justin Wansley (Richmond, Va.) connected on a three-point play, and the Yellow Jackets sealed the victory going 6-for-6 at the free throw line, including four by Carlson.
Carlson (Woodbridge, Va.) had a career-high 23 points, as he went 7-for-15 from the floor and hit 7-of-9 free throws, and chipped in five rebounds. Wansley had his second double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Junior Phil Hawley (Weirton, W.Va.) had his first double-double of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. R-MC was playing its first home game of the season in its seventh game.
Sophomore guard Korey Whiting (Stafford, Va.) had his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds and added four assists and three steals. Junior center Jason Lentz (Diana, W.Va.) had a team-high 12 points. Junior forward Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va.) added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
EMU will break for final exams and return to action Saturday, December 17 against Ferrum College at 7 p.m.
