Lady Royals Fall to Yellow Jackets 4-3 in Overtime

Randolph-Macon College converted the game-winning goal six minutes into overtime to record a 4-3 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey match on Saturday in Ashland, Va.
R-MC (8-4, 5-2 ODAC) scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute when senior Margaret Meigs (Richmond, Va.) assisted senior Lyndsay Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa.). The Yellow Jackets scored again in the 30th minute on a goal by senior Erin DiDomenico (Chesapeake, Va.) assisted by senior Jessica Yoke (Newport News, Va.).
EMU (9-6, 4-4 ODAC) got on the board with one minute left in the half when senior Jonalyn Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa.) scored with an assist from senior Stephanie Derstine (Telford, Pa.). Denlinger tied the score at 2-2 14 minutes into the second period. Her second goal of the day moved her into seventh place on the EMU career points chart with 159, passing Jean Horning (158).
The Yellow Jackets jumped back out in front when Edginton assisted senior Carrie Peirce (Easton, Md.) with 11 minutes remaining. However, junior Kristie Souder (Telford, Pa.) tied the score again just one minute later with an assist from freshman Meghan Hershey (Paradise, Pa.).
The game went into overtime where Peirce scored the game-winner unassisted six minutes into the extra period. Shots were even at 18-18 while EMU led in penalty corners 8-6. Senior goalkeeper Christina Bender (Belleville, Pa.) had 11 saves in the losing effort. Freshman Nicole Vera (Stafford, Va.) had eight saves for the Yellow Jackets.
The Lady Royals secured the fifth seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament with quarterfinals beginning on Saturday, October 29. EMU will not know its first round opponent until learning the outcomes of Randolph-Macon at Lynchburg and Bridgewater at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday.
