Marlins Ride Strong Second Half to 4-2 Win Over Lady Royals

Virginia Wesleyan College scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the second half and went on to defeat Eastern Mennonite University 4-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey match on Wednesday in Virginia Beach, Va.
Freshman Julie Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa.) put EMU (8-4, 3-2 ODAC) on top when she scored with 3:32 remaining in the first half. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Maria Bowman (Bally, Pa.).
The Lady Royals took their 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Marlins came out strong at the start of the second half. Chrissy Clancy scored the first of two goals just 29 seconds into the second frame. She was assisted by Laura Weidema. Weidema followed 36 seconds later with an assist by Megan May to give VWC (9-3, 5-0 ODAC) a 2-1 advantage.
Kelly Messina scored six minutes later with an assist by Clancy for the eventual game-winner. Denlinger pulled the Lady Royals within 3-2 with 19 minutes left on her fourth goal of the season, all of which have been scored in the last four matches.
Clancy scored the final Marlin goal unassisted with two minutes left. Senior Christina Bender had three saves in goal for EMU. VWC goalkeeper Megan Koster had six saves. Shots were even at 16-16 while EMU led in penalty corners 16-8.
EMU will play its final home contest of the season on Saturday when the Lady Royals host the Maroons of Roanoke College at 7 p.m. as part of Homecoming at EMU.
