Hot Hampden-Sydney Handles EMU 80-65

Hampden-Sydney College continued its hot streak with its seventh straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in an 80-65 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Monday night in Hampden-Sydney, Va.
EMU (11-8, 7-6 ODAC) jumped out to an early 21-13 lead halfway through the first half. HSC (13-7, 8-5 ODAC) went on a 13-5 run knot the score at 26-26 with 6:31 remaining. The Tigers continued their run to jump ahead 37-30 with 2:18 left. The Royals scored the last five points of the half to close to within 37-35 at the break.
In the second period, the score was tied at 42-42 with 17:00 remaining before Hampden-Sydney made its move to put the game away. The Tigers went on an 11-3 run to pull ahead 53-45 with 12:20 remaining. Their lead never dropped below six the rest of the way in recording the 80-65 triumph.
EMU sophomore forward Jason Sager led all players with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double in 19 games. He also had three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Freshman guard Korey Whiting had 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Sophomore Jason Lentz had nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocks while freshman Brad Parkes ended a string of 11 straight games in double figures with eight points.
Freshman guard Drew Prehmus led the Tigers with 17 points and four blocks on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-4 from the three-point arch. Fellow freshman guard A.J. Dowell had 16 points and three assists while freshman forward Troy Kaase contributed 11 points and eight boards.
EMU shot just 33% from the floor and connected on 4-of-19 three point field goal attempts. The Royals went 17-for-21 at the free throw line for 81% accuracy. HSC shot 50.8% from the floor and 5-for-16 on three-pointers. The Tigers converted 15-of-22 free throw attempts.
EMU continues its road swing on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ODAC game at Emory & Henry College.
